The eruption, that started North of Vatnajökull the 7th of August is still ongoing and with almost the same power as when it began. Meanwhile the new lava covers 74 square kilometers what is twice the size of lake Myvatn. In good weather conditions you can have a look at the eruption yourself if you visit the two Bardarbunga webcams of Mila (best view during the night).

Those who are in travel business had last week a meeting with the authorities „Almannavarnir“ to talk over if it is possible to go somewhere you can see the eruption.

But this area has been closed since the eruption began because of danger of gas pollution or floods and ash fall in case of a subglacial eruption of Bardarbunga. There are still many and some strong earthquakes daily as the seismicity map of the Icelandic Vedurstofa shows.

Some people working in travel business lost a lot of money as it was not possible for them to offer bus or superjeep tours to the area in the South of Myvatn. The whole area was closed since the eruption started. Some scientists or media people are allowed to go there if they have a special permission. Those who own a small plane or helicopter were very lucky and could and still can sell a lot of flights. But of course the other providers want to be sure they can offer some tours for next summer where to eruption is to be seen if it is still active. The moment they are looking for a view point that can be reached safely.

In winter the roads are anyway closed due to snow. Nevertheless some people are trying to go there on their own but this is by far to dangerous and some were fined by the authorities.

By now the only secure way is probably to fly over the eruption. In good weather it’s possible to fly to the eruption on small planes from several places in Iceland. A flight over the glowing and splashy lava is absolutely breathtaking and if you want to see it once in your life time, then do it soon for example on a new Vulkan spontan tour as we did last September.

We are currently looking for a new Vulkan spontan date early next year.  In Myvatn or at the glacier lagoon Jökulsarlon you can see the glowing red sky in the direction of the lava in the night. The very best is to combine the idea of the eruption with the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested and you will get the newest informations right away.

Update: just one day later than this blog was posted this fantastic Video was shown in Icelandic tv ruv.is
